Meet Miss Dior: a fashionista with a Data-like logical side. Married to Captain Picard: a Linux lord with Jean-Luc Picard patience. On a chilly January night in 2005, a journey through space and time began for us when we decided to expand our family through adoption. Our journey to find the child meant for us has led us all over the galaxy, but in the end, we've come back home to adopt a child domestically.

A Recessionista Christmas Reflection

I love this Christmas tree! It's tall and elegantly shaped - and from our local nursery. No dead online trees for us this year!

My good friend, Ninny Fabulous, coined the word Recessionista while we were window shopping at Nordstrom. She said we used to Fashionistas and now we're Recessionistas. How true. How true.

This Christmas will definitely be Recessionista style for the Picard, Dior and Sweet Pea household. Our budget has never been tighter. Our Christmas tree has never had less packages under it. I'm pretty sure this is the first Christmas in 16 years Picard and I haven't gotten each other gifts. The wee will get a few small gifts, but nothing extravagant.

Our pocket books have never been lighter, but I have to say with 100% authenticity and sincerity my heart has never been fuller. I feel joyful on a daily basis. I feel so wholly and truly blessed that Alexa joined our lives this year, that I have been able to stay home with her and that she is exactly the person she is.

I'm not just saying that because it's what I'm supposed to say either. We know exactly why our finances are tight. We made a huge investment in happiness this year and her name is Alexandra Page. Plus, we are in a worldwide recession that is making a direct impact on Captain Picard's industry.

Although this year's bounty is not reflected in the gifts we're giving and receiving, it's one of the best Christmases we've ever had. I know that 2009 will lead us towards prosperity. I know it in the same way I knew that we would be matched quickly with domestic adoption and that I needed to leave my job and stay home with our little beauty. I know things are going to be changing again soon, and so I feel it's so important to cherish every moment of every day right now. It seems like focusing on what we don't have this year would be a big slap in the face to the man upstairs. I don't know about you, but I'm not feeling like ticking him off during the season dedicated to his birth.

Perspective: The little Chinese girl Christmas ornament I purchased last year next to Alexa's first Christmas ornament (a generous gift of Julie)

I still don't get it. Tell me one more time. This guy Santa is going to bring me stuff?

Am I happy? Yeeeeeeaaaaaaahhhh!

And Jesus has whispered to us all this year as we pinch pennies and make cookies instead of hitting the malls, "Return to me America...return to me..."

Alexa is phenomenally beautiful. I'm with you my dear. We truly have enough. More than enough. 2009 still looks bright to me too.

Love, Lori

I know just what you mean...I was unfairly retired early (too high on the salary scale) and now we live much more humbly. But I am blessed with the most wonderful husband and best friend in the world...Alan's true-blue dad. Gary never, ever complains and we both love the simplest of things, anyway. This may be a very quiet C-mas for all of us if the icy storm front comes in yet again, as predicted.
We've been pining away for that special old movie called "It's a Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart, but we never caught it on TV. Then last night my wonderful laptop let me google the entire film in the original black and white. What a blessing, and so are you, Amie, as well as Al, and Alexa. We really couldn't be richer. Love, Mama-Pat
