Meet Miss Dior: a fashionista with a Data-like logical side. Married to Captain Picard: a Linux lord with Jean-Luc Picard patience. On a chilly January night in 2005, a journey through space and time began for us when we decided to expand our family through adoption. Our journey to find the child meant for us has led us all over the galaxy, but in the end, we've come back home to adopt a child domestically.

Real Parents

It's official! As of 6 p.m. today all of the paperwork was signed and we became the official parents of Alexandra Page.

We got our first test as parents last night. We learned quickly the heart wrenching pain and worry you go through when your wee one gets sick. After our blog post last night we got a call from the hospital. The Dr. told us that Alexa's blood work had come back showing signs of infection. When I asked on a scale of 1 to 10 how serious it was, she gave me a 6 or 7. They immediately gave Alexa a spinal tap to determine what was causing the infection. We rushed back the hospital and got there just in time to rub Alexa's legs after her painful procedure. We spent the night at the hospital so we could be close by when the next test results were ready.

This morning we got great news, her spinal fluid is not infected. We won't know until tomorrow what is causing the infection, but the antibiotics are already helping. Her second blood test which was run late today showed a significant reduction in her infection. She will most likely be in the hospital for 7 days for a full course of antibiotics.

It's hard to believe this little beauty is sick at all, because all of her vitals are so good. Her heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen intake, temperature, coloring, eating and pooping skills are all top notch. Last night was scary, but we firmly believe this is a minor infection and our little beauty will be just fine after her full course of antibiotics.

Baby Alexa sleeping peacefully in the NICU. She does have her intravenous intake on top of her head, because that was her best vein. As you can see, it doesn't bother her at all.

Daddy Picard dispenses the medicine of love to wee one today. Because she's in intensive care, we have to wear the yellow gowns every time we hold her. But, we can hold her as much as we want.....which is a lot!!

Mommy Dior prepares Alexa for all of the fabulous things she'll find in her new home like kitties, a bright room, all the formula she could want and the finest education in luxury goods.

What a first 24 hours!! Welcome to parenthood. I'm sure better days are ahead, but it already sounds like things are looking up. You both look very natural holding Alexa and your smile is priceless. Our thoughts are with you.

OK, I'm just going to say it: that is one PRETTY baby girl. Newborns tend to look a little...scrunched, but not Alexa. She's just a sweet little rosebud! Loving the "Alexa"! Glad to hear she's got some spunk. Just reading your post, the transformation is complete. Mommy and Daddy Rickels have arrived!
