Meet Miss Dior: a fashionista with a Data-like logical side. Married to Captain Picard: a Linux lord with Jean-Luc Picard patience. On a chilly January night in 2005, a journey through space and time began for us when we decided to expand our family through adoption. Our journey to find the child meant for us has led us all over the galaxy, but in the end, we've come back home to adopt a child domestically.

How do you choose a race and not feel racist?

(My multi-color kitty kats being forced into baby clothes because
I have no non-furry babies to put them on. So cute.)

Today was the big day. We met with our home study agency to learn about domestic adoption. It was an intensive three hour seminar with lots of overwhelming information. We learned most of the things we wanted to learn, plus some things we hadn't anticipated. The highlights are:
-Our state is a great state to adopt
-Birth mothers only have 30 days to relinquish their rights
-It's nearly impossible to overturn an adoption (in our state), even within the 30 days
-It's more likely that a birth mother changes her mind before signing the paperwork
-The adoption, including paperwork, is finalized 60 days after placement
-Most birth mothers want to meet the adoptive parents
-Being open to multiple options is the quickest way to be matched

All of the above points were reassurances of what we already believed to be true. What was surprising was how much of the information centered around race. There are two domestic adoption plans which are broken down by race. Since we're very open to multiple races, I found the format discomforting, but understand why it exists.
-If our criteria is the healthiest possible child we should choose a Hispanic child
-If our criteria is healthy and the fastest option we should choose African-American
-It's worth noting that Caucasian children are the most likely to be exposed to drugs and take the longest to be matched with. (Although it hasn't been our desire to have a Caucasian child.)

The hard part is, we cannot choose Hispanic and African-American together. They are in different plans. We have to choose one or the other. On top of that, we have to choose this option or China. It's not financially or emotionally possible for us to do both.

Really, the decision is made. I just need some more mulling time before we can confidently put it out there. You know how you go around the world to find what you always wanted at home? Well, that's what domestic adoption is shaping up to be. Picard feels strongly pulled to the Hispanic option. I feel strongly indecisive about choosing a race, but feel happy that he has found another option besides China that feels good to him.

For those of you who know, love and embrace Picard's change resistance you'll appreciate his most loving comment of the night - "you need to get going on a room, right?" Meaning, you have my thumbs up to do the baby room thing. Big steps!

Also, big loves to my girlfriend Taffi who bought me the baby clothes pictured above. (Sorry for putting them on the kitties...I couldn't resist!) She came down this weekend to visit which was a way helpful fun distraction to waiting for this Wednesday to come.

Hola, nuevo padres! We don't speak Spanish, but we DO watch A LOT of Dora the Explorer over here. While awaiting Sara, I put her bibs on Syd and sent the pics into "Stuff on my Cat"...nada. Apparently only a certain subset of cat lovers appreciate baby clothes on cats. We should form a club.

How 'bout we change the phrase from, "The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step" TO "The journey of a thousand miles could have been taken in a single step" HA HA. Just jokes. I've often traveled far to find that home is where I belonged.
Good luck and Godspeed, Greg & Lori

This is the most exciting news yet! Now, maybe Papa-Gar and Mama-Pat can quit rocking Andy and Minnie in blankets every night. Both me-ow's are getting more human every day.
